{"id":172,"date":"2023-04-11T18:17:44","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T12:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcolombo.esteri.it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/emergency-travel-documents-etd\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T09:41:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T04:11:21","slug":"emergency-travel-documents-etd","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ambcolombo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/emergency-travel-documents-etd\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency Travel Document (ETD)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you are abroad and find yourself in an emergency situation &#8211; for example, if your passport is lost or stolen while you are travelling or in transit and you are unable to apply for a new passport due to time constraints or other circumstances &#8211; the Embassy\u2019s Consular Office may issue a <strong>temporary travel document <\/strong>(also known as <strong>E.T.D. \u2013 Emergency Travel Document<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As of 9 December 2025, the new <strong>EU Emergency Travel Document (EU E.T.D.)<\/strong>, provided for under Directive (EU) 2019\/997 and the Decree of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of 26 July 2024, is in use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU E.T.D. is a temporary travel document that may be issued to:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Italian citizens;<\/li>\n<li>citizens of other European Union Member States that are not represented in the country where they are located, subject to authorisation by their Member State of nationality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The document is valid for a single journey and may be issued for travel to:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>the Member State of which the applicant is a citizen;<\/li>\n<li>the applicant\u2019s country of permanent residence;<\/li>\n<li>in exceptional cases, another destination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>HOW TO APPLY FOR AN EMERGENCY TRAVEL DOCUMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To apply for an EU E.T.D., applicants must complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcolombo.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Formulario-ETD-UE.pdf\"><strong>EU ETD Application Form<\/strong><\/a>. The application must also be accompanied by the following documents:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>a declaration concerning the theft, loss or destruction of the passport or other travel document, made before the Consular Office pursuant to Articles 46 and 47 of Presidential Decree No. 445 of 28 December 2000, with due regard to the provisions of Article 76 of the same Decree;<\/li>\n<li>a police report concerning the theft, loss or destruction of the passport or other travel document, filed with the local police authorities;<\/li>\n<li>where it is not possible to capture an image of the applicant\u2019s face at the time of application, a digital or scanned photograph of the applicant that complies with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcolombo.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/ALL-03-Passaporto-requisiti-fotografia-e-specifiche-ICAO.pdf\"><strong>ICAO Document 9303 specifications<\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>the applicant\u2019s travel ticket, if available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Please note:<\/strong> The police report concerning the theft, loss or destruction of the passport filed with the local police authorities should also be used to facilitate border transit where the applicant no longer has the passport containing the visa used to enter Sri Lanka or the Maldives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>ISSUANCE OF THE EMERGENCY TRAVEL DOCUMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applicants are not required to appear in person at the Embassy in order to obtain the document. However, collecting the E.T.D. directly from the Embassy is the fastest and most reliable option.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applicants who choose to have the document delivered by post must send the required documentation to the Embassy and transfer to the Embassy\u2019s bank account any amounts due for postage. The E.T.D. will then be sent to the address provided by the applicant. In such cases, delivery times depend <strong>entirely <\/strong>on the postal service and cannot be guaranteed by the Embassy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>VALIDITY OF THE DOCUMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU E.T.D. is valid <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">exclusively<\/span> for the journey for which it was issued and, in any event, <strong>for a maximum period of 15 days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>IMPORTANT<\/u><\/strong><strong>: At the end of the journey, once the holder has reached their destination, the EU E.T.D. must be surrendered:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>to the border police or another competent police authority if the destination is Italy;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>to the Consular Office responsible for the place of destination if the journey ends in a country other than Italy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The document must be surrendered regardless of any remaining period of validity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>FEES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Throughout 2026, the issuance of an EU ETD is <strong>free of charge<\/strong>.
