Deputy Foreign Minister Tripodi’s mission to Sri Lanka

Deputy Foreign Minister Maria Tripodi visited Sri Lanka from September 3rd to 5th in a mission of relevant significance for the relations between the two countries, marking the first political presence of an Italian government representative in ten years.

The Deputy Minister held the first political consultations between Italy and Sri Lanka, following the signing of the Memorandum on the Mechanism for biennial high-level Political Consultations. Among the topics discussed with Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Arun Hemachandra, were trade, investment and tourism, energy transition and food security, as well as cooperation in the fields of education and culture, and a focus on migration and mobility.

During the visit to Colombo, the Undersecretary also held productive discussions with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath.
