Consular Services and Visas

CONSULAR SERVICES

Consular services are provided in accordance with the principles of equality, impartiality, efficiency and transparency.

Italian Embassies and Consulates provide assistance and protection to Italian nationals whose fundamental rights have been violated or whose personal freedom has been restricted or denied. They also provide assistance in cases of emergency, in searching for family members, in succession proceedings abroad and in repatriating remains. To access up-to-date information on the main services provided by the diplomatic-consular network, visit Services to Italians abroad – Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale.

ACCESS TO CONSULAR SERVICES

Consular services at the Embassy are available by appointment only. Appointments must be booked online through the link https://prenotami.esteri.it/. Visitors without an appointment will therefore not be admitted to the Consular Section.

Appointments must be booked personally by the applicant using their own personal email address. Appointments made through agencies or intermediaries, or using temporary/disposable email addresses, will be cancelled.

Once logged into the Prenot@mi portal, applicants can select the appropriate service category (identity and travel documents, registry and civil status, notarial services, pensions) and choose an available date and time. For any service not specifically listed in the drop-down menu, please select “Consular Services”.

New appointment slots are released periodically, usually on a weekly or monthly basis. If no appointments are currently available for the required service, please wait a few days and try again. Please do not book an appointment under a different service category from the one you actually require.

Appointments for document legalization services must be booked exclusively through VFS Global, the Embassy’s external service provider, and not directly with the Embassy. For information on how to book an appointment, please refer to the dedicated page, available at the following link Translation and legalization of documents.

EMERGENCIES AND URGENT CASES

Only Italian nationals may visit the Embassy without an appointment in the event of an emergency or a demonstrably urgent need, such as applying for an Emergency Travel Document.

In such cases, applicants may come directly to the Embassy during public opening hours, Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., without an appointment.

VISAS

For all information on visa applications, please visit the dedicated Visas section of the Embassy’s website, available at the link Visas – Embassy of Italy in Colombo.
