The death of an Italian citizen occurring abroad must be registered in the Civil Status Records of the competent Italian Municipality (the Municipality of last residence in Italy, AIRE registration or birth).
To request the registration, an appointment at the Embassy must be booked through the Prenot@mi portal, and the following documentation must be submitted:
- Death certificate issued by the Sri Lankan or Maldivian Civil Registry Office having jurisdiction over the place where the death occurred. Before being submitted to the Embassy, the certificate must be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, which must issue the relevant certification. Please note: the certification must refer to the authority that issued the civil status record and not to any translations or registers;
- Copy of the deceased’s Italian passport and a copy of the identity document or passport of the person requesting the registration;
- Application form for registration of the death certificate, duly completed, dated and signed.
Once any necessary checks on the authenticity of the documentation have been completed, with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the original documents will be forwarded to the competent Italian Municipality for registration. The original documents submitted cannot therefore be returned.
